Qing Ming at Bukit Brown (9 April 2022)

There was a sudden downpour of rain in the morning but fortunately it cleared when we arrived Bukit Brown to continue to observe Qing Ming intangible cultural heritage practices. Surprisingly, there were many descendants who braved the uncertain weather to come down and pay respects. The first one i met were the grandchildren and great grandchildren of Madam Tan Lai Poh (wife of Mr. Teo). After seeking permission from Evelyn, we were warmly welcomed to take pictures and have conversations with them. The sounds of laughter broke through the greenery surrounding the area where Madam Tan Lai Poh tomb is located as the Teo family bonds were renewed and stories shared. I was also touched by the fact they lighted joss stick for many of the surrounding neighboring tombs as a sign of respect or as an act of alms.

I also found out that tombkeeper Ah Soon who is a familiar friendly face in Block 4 Section A, has been attending and taking care of the tomb of Madam Tan Lai Poh for many years. I forgot to ask Ah Soon how old is he now, but other Bukit Brown volunteers ("Brownies") also have met him since back in 2012 is testament to his lasting presence over the years.
