Tan Chin Wah and Chan Phong Neo (Bukit Brown)

Tan Chin Wah passed away away at the age of 58 on 14 May 1935. Madam Chan Phong Neo passed away at the age on 34 on January 1924. The tomb is partially blocked by a huge fallen tree across it years ago but fortunately i can still make out enough.

Million dollar appeal over family property rejected

In a newspaper article dated 27 May 1969, three brother - Tan Hin Choon, Tan Him Yam and Tan Hin Pung (owners by equal shares in 1953 of a land the size of 85,323 square feet in Pasir Panjang) brought to court a civil suit against the Ban Hin Lee Bank Ltd of Singapore for that said land currently by the bank after it was mortgaged on 23 December 1953. I learned from the article that Tan Hin Pung has sinced passed away intestate and his widow, Chong Swee Eng who administers his estate has joined her 2 brothers-in-law as plaintiffs in the suit against the bank. 

I also learned that the brothers were directors of the Eng Wah Manufacturing Co. Ltd (a sago manufacturer) and by end of November 1953, the company owed the bank $202,693 on an overdraft and were unable to pay. The company's land was then worth about $170,000. They lost in that case and subsequently appealed again. This case dragged on to 1973 when it was reported in a 26 June 1973 papers that they tried to appeal by bringing the case to The Privy Council for a land that by now is worth 6 times of its last valuation of $426,000.

Eng Wah Manufacturing covers and extensive area on the main Pasir Panjang Road and was run by 3 brother - Tan Hin Pung, Tan Hin Choon and Tan Hin Yam. There are also affiliated with Eng Hoe and Co. Rubber Estate Suppliers of the same address. 

Eng Wah Mfg. Co., Ltd have been exporting large quantities of their "Chain" Brand coconut oil to the Food Ministry in the United Kingdom (reported in 1947) and reported to be of top quality. Unfortunately by 1952, competition by other countries slowly led to the copra /coconut oil decline.

From what i can deduce, Tan Chin Wah himself was the main partner of Eng Hoe & Company at 5 Phillip Street. This business was a partnership of Tan Chin Wah, Soh Kee Suan, Yap Geok Twee (alias Yap Twee) and Yap Soo Hock which was dissolved on 23 January 1925 and taken over solely by Tan Chin Wah.

Family 

Son: Tan Hin Pung 

United Chinese Amateur. Tan Hin Pung was the patron of this club and when his father passed away, it was mention that on May 18, 1935 that night visit to Phillip Street. Messrs. Tan Hin Pung was also the Managing Partner of Messrs. Eng Hoe and Co. 

Son: Tan Hin Choon 

He was also an active member of United Chinese Amateurs. Tan Hin Choon was an oil miller. Tan Hin Choon passed away at the age of 81 on 26 August 1986. The name of his family

The engagement is announced of Mr. Tan Hin Yam (third son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tan Chin Wah of Singapore to Miss Kwik Poh Swan (eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kwik Tiang Boon of Singapore). Announced on 20 June 1941. That marriage eventually lead to a divorce.
