Note:
There were two Tan Boon Guan during the time period. The other Tan Boon Guan was ; Tan Boon Guan, J.P. who passed away at the age of 64 at his residence in Geylang Road on 27 March 1936. That Tan Boon Guan is the second son of Tan Kong Wee and a nephew of Sir. Song Ong Siang. This Tan Boon Guan was a cashier of the police courts and acted as local preacher and superintendent of the Sunday School at the Prinsep Street Presbyterian Church, where his wife Madam Tan Guat Loke (daughter of Tan Boon Chin) was the organist.
All is not well on 5 March 1916 in the Tan family
The notice in the newspapers was shocking. It reads;
Notice is hereby given that my wife, Tay Siew Neo, my eldest son, Tan Tiow Suan and my daughter, Tan Hood Neo having left my protection on Monday the 5th of March 1916, i will not be held responsible for any debts incurred by them.
What happened in 1916 that led to this very public outburst by Tan Boon Guan ? I may not have the answer but eventually Tan Boon Guan ended buried side by side with Madam Tay Siew Neo.
After the death of Tan Boon Guan, the executors of the estate were Lee Kim Choo and Tok Beng Poh (both of No. 339 Onan Road, Singapore). - 8 Jan 1936
Breach of Trust - $5,750 involved
In a suit on June 1938, i gathered that there was still dispute for the estate of Tan Boon Guan when a suit was raised in courts between Tan Chip Lin and anor (law word for another) vs. Lee Kim Choo and anor. That eventually led to a charge of committing criminal breach of trust in respect of $5,750 belonging to the estate of Tan boon Guan (deceased). One of the trustees, Mr. Lee Kim Choo (52 year old Hokkien on August 1939) responded that he has taken the money for business. On 18 September 1939, it was reported that Lee Kim Choo was sentenced to a year's simple imprisonment.
