Alice Lim (Bukit Brown)

The ceramic picture of this lady caught my eye because on uniform top were chinese characters which i later found out to be Chung Hwa. Was she a student or teacher of Chung Hwa Girls' High School ? This remains a mystery for now. In the burial registrar, her name was listed as : Alice Lim. Alice Lim is a Teochew girl who passed away at the age of 18 on 24 January 1937. From this further information, it is more possible that she was a student there. Alice Lim of Chung Hwa Girls' High School (1937) (Postnote: 30 May 2026) - Thanks to Raymond Goh's latest article , i confirmed that Alice Lim / Alice Lim Moo Yee was indeed a student in Chung Hwa Girl's High School and not only that, from the chinese papers - she won first prize in a competition, maybe an inter-school mandarin oratory competition. Mrs. Ang Kay Cheong nee Madam Tan Hong Neo (Bukut Brown)

Madam Tan Hong Neo nee Nya Nya passed away at the age of 48 at her residence, No. 1 Martaban Road on 18 April 1937. Mrs. Ang Kay Cheong nee Tan Hong Neo alias Tan Nya Nya leaves behind her husband, Mr. Ang Kay Cheong, her only brother, Mr. Tan Boon Chye, 7 sons; Ang Ann Hoe, Ang Ann Beng, Ang Ann Poh, Ang Ann Guan, Ang Ann Kiat, Ang Ann Lock, Ang Ann Liang 3 daughters; Mrs. Ong Kim Seng Miss Ang Leng Neo, Miss Ang Cheng Neo 1 son-in-law: Ong Kim Seng 2 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. Brothers Lim Kim Siew and Lim Kim Hock (Bukit Brown)

Lim Kim Siew passed away at the age of 9 on 6 January 1937. His older brother, Lim Kim Hock passed away at the age of 12 on 13 January 1937. This means that both brothers passed away around 6 days apart from each other. A check with the tomb keeper (who has been working in the area for the past 30 years) told us the two boys died of high fever (typhoid fever). They are buried in the same hill and section. It must have been devastating for their parents to bury both sons who died at such a young age. Lim Kim Siew and Lim Kim Hock are the children of Mr. and Mrs. Lim Khiam Soon . Lim Kim Siew (9 years old) Lim Kim Hock (12 years old) Related Stories A similar story that comes to my mind is the story of Master Tay Tow Seeh (9 years of age) and his sister, Miss Tay Poon Neo (7 years old) who passed away on 16 and 15 December 1926 . Wee Geok Hay - Bini Sayang (Bukit Brown)

Today i am able to see another rare tomb at the pauper section of Bukit Brown. It's a simple tomb but what captured my attention is - Bini Sayang . It is a malay word for my beloved wife. That is what makes this tomb so culturally unique. The headstone reads; Bini Sayang Wee Geok Hay Died on 3rd December 1955 Note: 1955 is a mistake and if you look closer at the headstone that i chalked, you can make out 3 numbers - 302. Bini Sayang - Wee Geok Hay / Beloved Wife -Wee Geok Hay Unfortunately, there is no information i can gather about her. Initially even her date of death etched on the tomb 3rd December 1955 does not match with anyone on the burial registrar. However thanks to Raymond Goh online burial registrar checker and also confirming it visually with the actual burial registrar, i found her burial entry. Wee Geok Hay passed away at the age of 43 and is buried on 4 December 1935 at Pauper IV, Division III, 302. This explains the small numbers 302 below died on...

Unnamed boy of Mr. and Mrs. Too Joon Ting (Bukit Brown)

The simple marble headstone reads, No 75 Block 4 Here lies the Beloved Boy of Mr. and Mrs. Too Joon Ting To me this tomb is a rare find providing evidence where the baby buried here is unnamed ! Usually after many years of exploring, children who were unnamed and passed away don't even have a proper tombstone / headstone marked for them. Beloved Boy of Mr. and Mrs. Too Joon Ting What was the boy's name and when did he die ? This information was missing from the tomb. Fortunately with the efforts of Raymond Goh in making the database of Bukit Brown burial registrar searchable , i manage to get a bit more insight about this boy. Child of Joon Ting Too - passed away 6 and 1/2 hours on 8 June 1941. He was buried on 10 June 1941 and was Hainanese boy. So in short it was a unnamed baby boy of Mr. and Mrs. Too Joon Ting who lived for 6.5 hours before passing on. In the same area /plot are the following: Unnamed child of Khoo Huat / 11 months 13 ...

Mrs. Lim Khiam Soon nee Madam Wee Kim Choo (Kopi sua)

Mrs. Lim Khiam Soon nee Madam Wee Kim Choo passed away on 10th January 1955 at the age of 50. In the newspaper article it states: Madam Wee Kim Choo, age 53 (wife of the late Mr. Lim Khiam Soon, of Chop Teng Chiang ) passed away peacefully on 10 January 1955 at 34 Goodman Road, leaving behind 8 sons, 6 daughters, 5 son-in-law, 3 daughters-in-law, 15 grandchildren. Fortunately from the tomb of Madam Wee Kim Choo nee Mrs. Lim Khiam Soon, we can gather most of the names of the children. Sons: Lim Kim Liang, Lim Kim Chuan, Lim Kim Sye, Lim Kok Chye, Lim Kim Leong, Lim Lam Seng, Lim Kim Chiang Daughters: Lim Geok Choo, Lim Geok Lian, Lim Geok Keow, Lim Geok Wah, Lim Geok Eng Grandson: Lim Boon Hai Granddaughter: Lim Siew Eng, Lim Siew Gek, Lim Seow Leng, Lim Choon Hoon Mrs. Lim Khiam Soon nee Madam Wee Kim Choo Husband: Lim Khiam Soon Mr. Lim Khiam Soon (alias Lim Soot) proprietor of Chop Teng Chiang passed peacefully at his residence No 707, North Bridge Road, 19 February 2604 (1944) at...

Lee Chim Sian (Bukit Brown)

Lee Chim Sian, brother of Lee Chim Bong, Lee Chim Tuan, Lee Chim Hock and Lee Chim Huk passed away peacefully and suddenly at the General Hospital at 1:30 am on Monday, 29 March 1937. He was 53. He leaves behind; Wife: Madam Koh Geok Sin Son: Lee Kip Siew 5 daughters, 1 son-in-law: Wee Sian Leok Lee Chim Sian From his tomb, the name of his children are as follows; Son: Lee Kip Siew Adopted Son: Lim Lee Huat Daughters: Lee Joo Lian, Lee Joo Hup, Lee Joo Imm, Lee Joo Sinn, Lee Joo Neo The cortege left his residence at 180 East Coast Road for Bukit Brown Cemetery. Lim Kow Nah (Bukit Brown)

Lim Kow Nah passed away at the age of 66 on 19 September 1936 at his residence in No. 40 Outram Road leaving behind his wife, 9 sons, 3 daughters, 4 daughters-in-law, 5 sons-in-laws and 30 grandchildren. Lim Kow Nah was a shareholder of the Oversea Chinese Bank in 1936 and in 1922 bought 25 acres of freehold rubber land in Thomson area for $7,800. In 1935, Lim Kow Nah bought freehold land of 92,223 sq ft for $80 in Tiong Bahru Road. Wee Kim Chong (Bukit Brown)

In ever loving memory Of Our Darling Wee Kim Chong Born 6th March 1932 Died 28 December 1936 The shield shaped marble tomb holds the remains of baby Wee Kim Chong who died at the age of 4 years and 9 months. On the burial entry he was listed as Hokkien and was buried on the same day he passed away. It was a chanced encounter, has the shield shaped marble was 2/3 buried underneath the soil but fortunately with some work, we can share that baby Wee Kim Chong was of the many buried in Bukit Brown. Madam Sim Choon Hong (Bukit Brown)

Madam Sim Choon Hong passed away on 18 March 1936. What is also interesting is the engraving that list her as Hokkien - Chiow Wan. On the burial registrar, her name is listed as Sim Chua Hong and she was 36 years old when she passed away.
