Tan Chin Tah (Bukit Brown)

Mr. Tan Chin Tah came to Malaya when he was roughly 15 years old (1886) from China and joined the Government Monopolies Department. He was later approached by Mr. Lim Peng Siang (Chairman of the Ho Hong Bank) to fill the capacity of manager of their branch in Muar. Mr. Tan Chin Tah held this position for 15 years and was forced to retired owning to ill-health in 1933. Tan Chin Tah was the branch manager of the Ho Hong Bank in Muar. Tan Chin Tah ( also spelt as Tan Chin Tia) Death Tan Chin Tah passed away at the age of 65 his residence, No. 130 Emerald Hill Road on 30 July 1936 at 3:30 am. Tan Chin Tah left behind; a widow and 3 sons; Messrs. Tan Cheng Swee, Tan Cheng Tee and Tan Cheng Hai. 2 daughters-in-law and 3 grandchildren. Ulu Pandan War Cemetery

On 12 July 1955, a cemetery for British servicemen was opened by Major-General D. D. C. Tulloch at a site along Ulu Pandan Road near Clementi Road. He received the keys to the cemetery gates from Mr. W. E. Warr, the Garrison Engineer. The 2.5 hectare cemetery had different burial plots for Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Protestants and Roman Catholics. The cemetery commemorates many of those who gave their lives in the defense of Malaysia and Singapore during: The Malayan emergency 1948-1960 The Indonesian Confrontation, 1964-1966 In 1975, arrangements were made for the cemetery’s 1,587 graves to be relocated to make way for urban redevelopment. Some of the exhumed remains were later reburied at the Kranji War Memorial. From one article, it was said that a total of 748 were reburied at Kranji War Memorial, 838 were cremated and 1 was privately buried. Goh Kee Hoon and their Door Gods revisited.

Goh Kee Hoon passed away on 22 July 1930. The last address listed was 41 Emerald Hill Road. Executor of his estate was to his wife, Madam Tan Suan Neo. Mrs. Goh Kee Hoon nee Tan Suan Neo passed away on 20 November 1941 at the age of 57, at her residence at No 41 Emerald Hill Road. She leaves behind; Two sons: Goh Khiam Seng and Goh Tian Hock, Two daughters: Goh Chit Neo and Goh Kim Neo, Two son-in-laws: Chan Wah Swee and Cheong Chee Soon Three grandsons: Goh Tye Peng, Laurie Chan and Goh Charlie and one granddaughter, Alice Chan. Goh Kee Hoon Madam Tan Suan Neo Door Gods (门神) and what they represent Door gods, or 门神 (Menshen), are traditional guardians depicted on the doors of Chinese temples and homes. These figures are deeply rooted in Chinese folk religion and culture, serving both spiritual and symbolic purposes. Lee Pang Kok and family (Bukit Brown)

Lee Pang Kok alias Lee Teng Sin passed away at age of 53 at 2 am on 7 October 1930 at his residence in No. 6 Stanley Road. He is survived by his widow, 4 sons; Lee Siew Kow, Lee Siew Pan, Lee Puan Beng and Lee Siew Teck 4 daughters; Lee Tan Neo, Lee Chwee Neo, Lee Kim Neo, Lee Swee Lew, Lee Yew Choo 1 daughter-in-law, 4 grandsons; Lee Chay Min, Lee Chay Kia, Lee Chay Tian, Lee Chay Song and 1 grand daughter to mourn his loss. Photograph of Lee Pang Kok (19th year of the Republic) I am not able to find much information about Lee Pang Kok, but in 1918 there was an article of dissolution of partnership business, Chop Lian Huat, Tobacco Merchants at Malacca Street, Singapore. The business was dissolved by mutual consent by its former partners which included Soon Wee Joey, Lee Pang Kok and Chua Yeow Whee. Mrs Koh Sek Lim nee Ang Chit Yan (Bukit Brown)

Madam Ang Chit Yan is buried in Bukit Brown, Hill 4 Section C plot no. 80. She is the wife of Mr. Koh Sek Lim whose legacy is remembered by two road named after him, Koh Sek Lim Road and Xilin Avenue. Madam Ang Chit Yan passed away at her residence Gulega Bedoh Estate, No 655-17, Padang Terbakar, Bedoh (Bedok) at 10:15 pm on Friday, 12th November 1937 at the age of 65. She is survived by her husband, Mr. Koh Sek Lim, 14 sons ( Koh Kong Wee , Koh Kong Wan, Koh Kong Boon, Koh Kong Seng, Koh Kong Sun, Koh Kong Hai, Koh Kong Leong, Koh Kong Hor, Koh Kong Thian and 5 others, 5 daughters-in-law, (Mrs. Koh Kong Wee, Mrs. Koh Kong Wan. Mrs. Koh Kong Seng, Mrs. Koh Kong Sun, Mrs, Koh Kong Hor, 10 daughters, 4 son-in-laws ( Yeo Eng Tiong, Wee Swee Seng, Lim Teck Seng, Lim Eng Yong and 30 grandchildren). Tan Swee Hoe and family (Batu Pahat)

Sometime back in August 2012, i wrote an article about Tan Swee Hoe who is buried in Bukit Brown. Tan Swee Hoe came to Singapore as a young boy and worked his way up, eventually becoming one of founders of Ho Hong Bank, and later a director of Overseas Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC) after it merged with it. He was also for two terms, the president of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Batu Pahat, shareholder of Ho Aik Steamships. Tan Swee Hoe was a member of the Council of State, Johore and received a title S.M.J (Setia Mahkota Johore) from the government of Johore in 1929 for his contributions. He owned several property in Singapore and Batu Pahat. Pasir Panjang Military Cemetery

Pasir Panjang Military Cemetery was a small military cemetery located in a former British military complex on Ayer Rajah Road. It contains the graves of 714 British, Commonwealth and Gurkha service personnel and their families who died during the period of March 1948 until March 1957. Also there are remains of 186 service personnel and their families exhumed from pre-war graves in Bidadari Christian Cemetery in 1964. These graves are placed in the first few rows to the left and right of the entrance. With the exception of the pre-war graves, the cemetery is divided into two halves, with Christians buried on the left and Hindus (mainly Gurkhas) buried on the right. Kamala Circus - The Great Indian Circus visits Singapore

I heard about the Tai Thean Kew circus from my involvement with Bukit Brown and during one my tours on the Queenstown Heritage Trail , i was told of another Indian circus troupe that existed in the late 1950's and 1960's. Recently, while curating ideas for a Bukit Brown tour on Pioneers of Early Entertainment, i came across a travelling circus troupe by the name of Kamala Circus. Kamala Circus (source: NewspaperSG) Kamala Circus was reputed to be the largest travelling show in the Far East. It boasted over 100 Indian artist and featured acts such as the flying trapeze act, the "Globe of Death" motor cycle act by two young girls, a 30 foot leap by a motorcyclist and the "cat" act. It claims over 300 tons of equipment and animals which include 16 horses, 8 Ceylon baby elephants, an African lion and 2 lionesses, 2 tiger cubs and 3 Indian mountain goats. Tan Swee Hoe mansion in Batu Pahat

The status of Tan Swee Hoe's mansion at 160 Jalan Kluang, Batu Pahat was finally revealed! The mansion that was once owned by Tan Swee Hoe's descendants was sold and the rumors circulating at one point of time was it was going to be demolished. In fact various readers of my blog sent me pictures of the mansion after it was sold where the rooftop of the building and the interiors was completely stripped. Tan Swee Hoe's mansion (minus the roof) Well it was finally revealed in various Malaysian papers ( Sin Chew Daily , Johor China Press ) that it was purchased by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, the Sultan of Johor. Tan Sian Keong and family (Bukit Brown)

Tan Sian Keong (1881-1941) was associated with chop Keat Bee and Co. and was also a Director of the Oversea-Chinese Bank, Limited. Oversea-Chinese Bank (OCB) was formed in 1919, with a paid-up capital of $5.25 million and its Board included many well known Chinese leaders including Dr. Lim Boon Keng (Chairman when it was first established), Lim Nee Soon (Chairman for several years), S.Q.Wong, Au Keng Chong, Tan Ean Kiam , Dr. S.C. Yin, Chua Hong Jian, Oei Teck Seng, Liew Hong Seck, Oei Yok Kie, Khoo Kok Wah, Yap Geok Song and others. In 1932, the directors of the Oversea-Chinese Bank (est. 1919), Ho Hong Bank (est. 1917) and the Chinese Commercial Bank (est. 1912) went into talks with merger in mind to strengthen the bank in the aftermath of the Great Depression.
