Kwa Siew Tee and family (Choa Chu Kang Christian Cemetery)

Kwa Siew Tee, a Semarang born Chinese was a Municipal Commissioner (an appointment he held till 1949). He was also the General Manager of Overseas Chinese Bank Corporation Limited, Assistant General Manager of The Eastern United Assurance Corporation, Limited and a Member of the Hospital Board. He received a Certificate of Honour in 1951. Kwa Siew Tee passed away at the age of 89 on 20 March 1977. Kung Tian Siong and family (Bukit Brown)

Kung Tian Siong and Siauw Mah Li Kung Tian Siong (T.S. Kung) was born in 1876 in Malacca. He later was educated in Anglo Chinese School in Singapore. T.S Kung was the managing proprietor of the Empire Cinema, manager of the Liberty Hall and director of Pontianak Gold Dredging Concessions, Limited. He was also the managing director of the Harima Hall, during which the manager was Tan Chong Chew. The President of the Straits Chinese Recreational Club, he was also a committee member of the Chinese Swimming Club and secretary and manager of the Garden Club and a member of the Straits Chinese British Association. He was a staunch Christian and a preacher who preached in Geylang and Bedok Methodist Church. Cinema magnate and preacher man Empire Cinema was open in 1916. It was located at the junction of South Bridge Road, Tanjong Pagar Road and Neil Road (opposite Kreta Ayer Police station). T.S. Kung sold of the theatre in March 19, 1928. Yeo Teck Hock (Bukit Brown)

Yeo Teck Hock was with the Union Insurance Society of Canton and was the Vice-President of the Gunong Sayang Association (1935). He was also the Hon. Treasurer of the United Confederate Funeral Association (Clubhouse at No 2151-Joo Chiat Road). Yeo Teck Hock passed away at the age of 74 on 4th October 1954. He is survived by 2 sons, Yeo Koon Yam and Yeo Koon Kim, 5 daughters, 5 sons-in-law, 2 grand daughter-in-law and several grandchildren. The cortege left from No. 5 Valley Road. Mrs. Yeo Teck Hock nee Lee Eng Lee passed away at the age of 53 at No 83-A Haig Road on 18 November 1936. She leaves behind her husband, 2 sons (Yeo Koon Yam, Yeo Koon Kim), 2 sons-in-law (Kwek Peng Ewe, Seow Khiam Hock), 5 daughters and 2 grandsons. Lim Swee Lian nee Mrs. Oei Koen Hian (Bukit Brown)

It started out with the baby photo of Lim Swee Lian together with her mother, Yeo Ai Lin and her biological father, Lim Dwan In that drew me in to find out more about what happened to her after the rediscovery of the tomb of Lim Dwan In. Fortunately there were some information from the archive newspapers. Madam Lim Swee Lian nee Mrs. Oei Koen Hian passed away at the age of 40 on 11 September 2603 (1943). From the obituary notice, Mrs. Oei Koen Hian, only daughter of Madam Yeo Ai Lin (Mrs. S.K. Lim) passed away at the age of 40 at 170 Bencoolen Street on 11 September 2603 (1943) leaving behind her mother, husband, 2 daughters, and 1 brother (Lim Hap Hin) to mourn her loss. From the tomb, we get confirmation on the names of her daughters; R. Wee Kim Neo (Rosie Wee Kim Neo / Rosie Oei Kim Nei ) B. Tan Jiak Kim (former Alexandra Cemetery)

Tan Jiak Kim, J.P. C.M.G. / 陈若锦 was born in Singapore on 29 April 1859 and came from an old and respected family. His grandfather was Tan Kim Seng, the founder of Kim Seng and Co, and a well known public benefactor. When he passed away in 1863, his son, Tan Beng Swee (Tan Jiak Kim's father) succeeded as head of the firm and was also a well known public figure in Singapore and Malacca. Educated privately, he entered the firm of Kim Seng and Co, as apprentice at the age of 18 where he gain business experience. After the death of his father, Mr. Tan Beng Swee in 1884, he was taken into partnership by his uncle, Mr. Tan Beng Gum . Tan Jiak Kim was also one of the founders of the Straits Steamships Company Ltd, a Director of the United Singapore Rubber Estates Ltd. In 1886, Tan Jiak Kim was elected a Municipal Commissioner and 1889 appointed as a member of the Legislative Council until he resigned in May 1915 when he resigned due to health reasons. Filial Piety - He Fed His Parents with Doe's Milk (Stories from the Stones)

Tan Zi's elderly parents were losing their sense of sight and believed that doe's milk could cure them. Upon hearing that, Tan Zi covered himself with deer's skin and got close to a doe to obtain its milk. He repeated the process every day. Once, a hunter mistook him for a real deer and almost killed him, but Tan Zi revealed himself and explained the situation to the hunter. From another source, During China's Spring and Autumn Period, there was a filial son in the Tan family whose name has not been recorded. People simply referred to him as Young Master Tan, or Tanzi. While he was quite young, both his parents came down with an eye disease that the doctors said could only be cured by giving them deer's milk to drink. As the family was very poor, and milk was both rare and expensive, the young lad was upset and worried that he would be unable to provide the medicine that could cure his mother and father. Teo Kah Chwee and family (Bukit Brown)

Teo Kah Chwee passed away at the age of 60 on 19th February 1930. He is survived by; 3 sons: Dr. Teo Kah Toh, Teo Tien Cheong, Teo Ban Hock 4 daughters: Teo Liew Hua. Teo Lian Hua, Teo Kiat Hua, Teo Ghye Hua. Family Dr. Teo Kah Toh Dr Teo Kah Toh studied in St. Joseph's Institution and he was once the President of the Mayflower Badminton Party and medial adviser to the Family Benefit Society and member of the International Buddhist Union. Dr Teo Kah Toh graduated from the Medical Faculty of Hong Kong University and upon his return to Singapore is practising at the Kiew Sam Dispensary, Middle Road. Dr. Teo Kah Toh passed away at the General Hospital on 11th June 1949 and was buried at Whitley Road Cemetery (Kopi Sua) on 13th June 1949. The old Commando building revisited (Changi Village)

I believe URA have called a tender to turn this building together with the old changi village into commercial and economically viable building. Seet Soon Neo nee Mrs. Goh Kim Swee (Lao Sua)

Seet Soon Neo passed away at the age of 57 on 19 January 1917. Her tomb has a beautiful quote that reads; In loving memory of our much beloved and highly esteemed mother Erected in remembrance of a life full of devotion and filled with loved The name of her children listed are as follows; Sons: Goh Hood Kee, Goh Hood Keng, Good Hood Seng, Goh Hood Keat, Goh Hood Teck Daughter: Goh Chin Neo Grandchildren: Goh Boo Lat, Goh Boo Eng, Goh Chit Neo, Goh Oh Neo Seet Soon Neo nee Mrs. Goh Kim Swee beautiful decorative tiles Family Husband: Goh Kim Swee Goh Kim Swee passed away at his residence at the age of 76 in Serangoon Road (near Serangoon English School) on March 1921. Kinoshita Japanese Circus

While researching on Circus acts and troupe in Singapore starting with Tai Thean Kew and subsequently Kamala Circus , i came across another unique circus troupe, a Japanese circus troupe by the name of Kinoshita Circus. It was the first Japanese circus to perform in Malaya and the troupe features trained seals, elephants, a fighting kangaroo, high wire trapeze artist, daredevil riders and other acts. Kinoshita circus arrived in Singapore in December 1955 together with 23 girls, 30 men, 4 elephants, a kangaroo and 6 seals. The President of the circus troupe was Mitsuzo Kinoshita, a man born and bred in Okayama City. In February 1957, Kinoshita Circus returned for the second time and one of its performance at Great World was attended by Singapore Governor, Sir Robert Black and Lady Black, Japan's Consul-General, Mr. Ken Ninomya and cinema magnate, Mr. Run Run Shaw.
