Tan Teng Ann (Bukit Brown)

The tomb was covered with vines, but upon uncovering it, the simple granite stone was engraved all in English. It reads;
In Loving Memory 
of the late
Mr. Tan Teng Ann 
who died  on 6th February 1942 
21st Day of the 12th moon
Age 60 years

Listed on Tan Teng Ann tomb are the name of his children; 
Sons: Tan Beng Ghee, Tan Beng Lay
Grandchildren: Tan Soo Bin, Tan Gwek Lian, Tan Gwek Chwee, Tan Gwek Yang

Tan Teng Ann was a shipping cashier of Boustead and Co., Ltd






Family 


Father : Tan Tiam Hoc
Mr. Tan Tiam Hock of Malacca celebrated his 74th birthday on 29 July 1927. Mr. Tan Tiam Hock is the father of 
Mr. Tan Teng Ann, of Boustead and Co. Singapore
Mr. Tan Gim Ann, an old School boy who is taking the B.A course in Hong Kong 
Mr. Tan Soon Ann and Tan Tam Kim who are now in Malacca.
Mr. Tan Tiam Hock was, like the late. Mr. Tan Chay Yan and others who whom he was associated, a pioneer rubber planter of Malacca. He was a part owner of Bukit Asahan Estate (now owned by the Malacca Rubber Plantations, Ltd. The newspapers went to mention that of the original owners of this estste, the only survivors are Mr. Tan Tiam Hock and Dr. Lim Boon Keng. 

Father-in-law: Ong Tiang Soon (1855-1934)
Ong Tiang Soon is the eldest son of Ong Ewe Hai. Following in his father's footsteps, he traded in rice and general produce, and was a merchant and steamship agent under the style of Soon Whatt and Soon Chiang at North Bridge Road. The firm were agents for the Sarawak and Singapore Steamship Company (steamers; Raja of Sarawak & Kuching). Rice was sent to Borneo and in return, pepper, gambier, rubber, sago flour and rattan were brought in. Ong Tiang Soon residence is "Bonny Grass", 100 River Valley Road. (see below for more information). Ong Tiang Soon passed away at his residence, No 12 Kim Yam Road on 30 October 1934 at the age of 80. The cortege left from No. 12 Kim Yam Road for the family Burial Ground at Boon Teck Road.
Ong Tiang Soon is the father of:
9 sons; Messrs. Ong Leng Hoon, Ong Hood Hin, Ong Chip Hee, Ong Beow Sim, Ong Chip Yan, Ong Chip Hong, Ong Chip Joo, Ong Joo Chin and Ong Soo Keng. 
5 daughters; Ong Yan Lin Neo, Ong Yan Gay Neo, Ong Yan Ho Neo, Ong Chim Kay Neo, Ong Yan Lip Neo, 5 sons-in-laws; Tan Kwee Liang, Tan Teng Ann, Tay Teng Hup, Soh Yiew Jin, Dr. Thung Siang Swee, 9 daughters-in-law, 48 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

As there were in the past possible similar names appearing in the same time line era making the linkage may be difficult but fortunately the relationship between Tan Teng Ann as son-in-law of Mr. Ong Tiang Soon was established from Madam Lim Boey Guat (wife of  Mr. Ong Tiang Soon) obituary notice. 


Sister: Tan Geok Lin Neo / Mrs. Chan Cheng Kiat 
Mrs. Chan Cheng Kiat nee Tan Geok Lin Neo passed away at the age of 61 at her residence, 41 Neil Road on 15 June 1935. She leaves behind her husband, 4 sons, Chan Siew Hoon, Chan Siew Kiong, Chan Siew Kiam, Chan Siew Jiang, 2 daughters, 1 daughter-in-law, 4 grandchildren and 4 bothers, Tan Teng Ann, Tan Gim Ann, Tan Soon Ann and Tan Kim. Mrs. Chan Cheng Kiat is buried in Bukit Brown,  Block 3 Section D, plot 568. 

Location of tomb 

Tan Teng Ann is buried in Block 5, Section E, plot 174 (very close to the landed property backyard of cluster houses of Lornie 18).
