Ang Kim Tee (Bukit Brown)

Ang Kim Tee (1839-1901) was the son of Ang Choon Seng. Ang Kim Tee took over the family business (chop Chin Seng) as the sole proprietor after the passing of his father and his elder brother, Ang Kim Cheak. Ang Kim Tee played an active role socially, being the Treasurer of the Kim Seng Free School in Amoy Street. Ang Kim Tee married a daughter of Mr. Lim Kong Wan. 3 of Ang Kim Tee's daughters became successively the wives of the Hon Mr. Tan Jiak Kim, while another daughter married Mr. Lim Tek Wee (Chief Clerk, Straits Times Office). His son, Mr. Ang Hock Siew is the chief cashier to the Straits Steamship Co. Ltd. 

Ang Kim Tee passed away at the age of 63 at his residence, No 7. McCallum Street on the 14 December 1901

Family 

Father: Ang Choon Seng 
Ang Choon Seng was born in Malacca in 1805 and came to Singapore at an early age. He started business in Philip Street under the chop Chin Seng  as commission agent and provision merchant. He owned two sail ships (Patah Salam and Konh Kek), trading to Saigon and Bangkok and nutmeg plantation. The nutmeg plantation was located somewhere at Moulmein Road when the cluster of family tombs of Ang Choon Seng. Ang Choon Seng passed away at 2 February 1852. 

Father-in-law: Lim Kong Wan 
Lim Kong Wan was born in Malacca and after a brief stay in Penang, he went on to settled in Singapore where he started his business as a produce merchant (chop Tiang Moh) in Chinchew Street. The business did well and he moved to a larger premises in Malacca street were he had sailing ships which collected produced from various ports and he traded. His eldest son, Lim Tiang Swee joined as his partner and the firm became to be known as Lim Kong Wan & Son. Lim Kong Wan passed away in 1869 and his son, Lim Tiang Swee became sole proprietor with his younger brother, Lim Tiang Hee as assistant and Tan Keong Saik (the shopping clerk). Subsequent rash speculation in tin, black pepper ans shares led to the company into huge debts of a quarter of a million dollars when it was under the leadership of Lim Tiang Hee and it closed down in 1889.  The estate of Lim Kong Wan was finally wound up in 1916 when the houses, No. 19 and 20 Malacca Street which has been the place of business of Lim Kong Wan & Son for about 30 years and also the plantation in Payah Lebar. There is a private cemetery of Lim Kong Wan and some his descendants located in the plantation which went to the ownership of Lim Tay Yam (eldest son of Mr. Lim Tiang Hee).  

Wife: Lim Keng Liew
The tomb of Mrs. Ang Kim Tee nee Madam Lim Keng Liew is beside the tomb of Ang Kim Tee. 

Daughter: Ang Geok Hoe / Mrs. Tan Jiak Kim
The body of Mrs. Tan Jiak Kim is lying at Mr. Tan Jiak Kim's house, "Panglima Prang", River Valley. The coffin and its coverings are said to be valued at nearly $20,000 (decorated with silk, gold and precious and one of the most costly coffin constructed at that time. She was buried at the family private cemetery at Alexandra on 17 November 1898 in a funeral procession attended by hundreds.

Daughter: Ang Geok Hean / Mrs. Tan Jiak Kim 
Mrs. Tan Jiak Kim nee Ang Geok Hean (fourth daughter of the late Ang Kim Tee) was the second wife of Mr. Tan Jiak Kim. While on a visit for the Coronation Ceremonies in London, she passed away at Hotel Metropole due to heart failure as a result of uraemia. She was 33 years old when she died on 11  August 1911. She was buried in Brookwood Cemetery. 

Daughter: Ang Geok Lan  / Mrs. Tan Jiak Kim 
Mrs. Tan Jiak Kim passed away at the age of about 50 on 1 October 1925 at Panglima Prang, River Valley.

Relocation of tombs 

On January 1932, 19 graves on the land at Moulmein Road and Thomson Road (situated in the Districts of Toah Pyoh and Rochore) estimated to be at 590,873 square feet belonging to the estates of Ang Kim Tee and Ang Teow Guan. In short, the graves were removed as the land was to be sold. Who were this 19 people who were exhumed and moved to Bukit Brown. 


From the Bukit Brown Burial Registrar, the answers to who are some the 19 moved can be seen (and of course if you explore the area of Block 3 Division B), some of the answers will also be clearer.

  2. 28 March 1932:  Soh Siok Eng and Ang Kim Chiak
  3. 9 April 1932: Remains of Ang Kim Tee (Blk 3 B, plot 70 and 1/2 of 57). 
  4. 9 April 1932: Remains include Lim Keng Liew (Blk 3 B plot 46 and 1/2 of 57),  Lim Chew Ang (Blk 3 B, plot 85)
  5. 9 April 1932: Remains of Ang Geok Kwee (Blk 3 B, plot 178)
  6. 13 April 1932: Remains of Ang Hock Guan (Blk 3 B, plot 292) and Ang Hock Teck (Blk 3 B plot 248)






Location of tomb 

Ang Kim Tee (Block 3 Division B, plot 70 and 1/2 of 57). His tomb is located just above the tomb of Lim Loh.
