Miss Chua Gek Eng (Bukit Brown)

Miss Chua Gek Eng passed away on 11 March 1937 at the age of 37. She is the late daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chua Ah Say. What is very interesting is that it states very clearly that she was born in Pulau Brani, Singapore. The Teochew tomb of Miss Chua Gek Eng is very beautiful with decorative tiles used to make it stand out even more.

When Miss Chua Gek Eng was born, there was already a huge Tin Smelting Plant set up by the Straits Trading Company on the island in 1890. The tin ore were shipped from Malaya, Siam and Australia. It may be plausible that Mr. Chua Ah Say may be have been working for the company or its supporting industries. Post independence, the island was home to about 500 Malays and Chinese who worked in the mainland before the island was developed into the Brani Naval Base or Maritime Command Base that was officially opened in 1974. Unfortunately i don't have any information about Miss Chua Gek Eng and her parents, Mr and Mrs. Chua Ah Say to make any concrete connections.
