Dr. George Herbert Garlick (former Bidadari Cemetery)

Dr. George Herbert Garlick was born in London on 22 June 1886. He received his education at Epson College and St. Mary's Hospital (1912) and was the House Physician there. He came to Singapore in May 1914 as a medical officer to Guthrie & Company's Tin Mining based in Trengganu. 3 years later, he became the medical officer to the Johore Government where he remained till 1930. He was then appointed Principal Medical Officer, Johore until his retirement in 1942. In recognition of his services, to Johore State, he was made a Dato (DPMJ) in 19 September 1938. 

When Japan invaded Malaya, Dr. Garlick joined the British Army as a radiologist and was captured and interned at Changi Jail. Post-war, when SATA (Singapore Anti-Tuberculosis Association) was formed in the mid-1947, Dr. G.H Garlick was selected as its Medical Director. Dr. G.H. Garlick was the director of the Royal Singapore Tuberculosis Clinic and a pioneer in the fight against this disease since 1948.

Dr. Garlick died at the age of 72 due to heart attack in Lucerne General Hospital, Switzerland on June 1958. His ashes were returned to Singapore and memorial service held on 25 June 1958 at St. Andrew's Cathedral before burial of his ashes at Bidadari Cemetery. In attendance at the graveside were Mrs. G.H Garlick and her their 2 daughters, June and Margaret
