Goh Chye Lay (Bukit Brown)

Goh Chye Lay was a cashier and collector employed by Mr. H. Wolskel for the past 7 years before he passed away. Goh Chye Lay was found ill in Joo Chiat Road on 5 March 1928. He was brought back to his house in Geylang and was attended by a Dr. Thompson. On his person, a chit was found that Goh Chye Lye wrote saying, "I took my own life, nobody is to blame". He was removed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital were he passed away on the same night.

A coroner enquiry return a verdict of "suicide due to mercury poisoning". His employer, Mr. Wolskel gave witness that there were defalcations in his account which were serious and being looked at by his  auditors to determine the extend on the total and when on to state that it was not a sum which the deceased could have hope to have borrowed and paid back. (whether this was proven subsequently at courts is unknown to me).
