Sim Kim Jee passed away at the age of 41 on 21 December 1936. From visual observation, the tomb of Mr. Sim Kim Jee and Madam Kan Poh Keng may no longer be occupied although the headstone is intact (but of course i can't be 100% sure). As for Madam Kan Poh Keng tomb, the date of death is not listed. The name of the children that i can gather is also limited to their daughters for now; Sim Hong Choo, Sim Hong Khuan. Sim Kim Jee was employed in two pineapple factories and was a mandore.
Sim Kim Jee |
Sim Kim Jee left his house in Albert Street at 10 am in the morning 10 November 1936 and told his motor-car driver (Chua Yong Meng) to take him to a chandu shop in Queen Street. After making a purchase, and as he was leaving the chinese chandu shop back to his motocar, two assailants shot Sim Kim Jee in the back at close range. Described as a 41 year old Chinese contractor, Sim Kim Jee lived on another 42 torturous days before dying of his wounds. He was admitted to General Hospital, where Dr. Ann Kee Hock of General Hospital gave evidence that the X-ray photograph show the bullet lodged on the 11th dorsal vertebrae which was fatal to remove. Dr. B.M. Johns did the operation and removed a blood clot, small pieces of bone from the bullet track and chips of lead which relieved the tension on the spine. Against medical advice, Sim Kim Jee was removed from Hospital. On 17 December 1936, Dr. Tan Bin Chiang, private practitioner was called in attend him, but after 2 further visits, he learned that Sim Kim Jee has died. Post mortem report list the cause of death as spinal cord and other troubles following gunshot wound and found 2 bullets, one lodged on the left side of the neck and the other on the 11th dorsal vertebrae. A verdict of murder amounting to culpable homicide against 2 persons unknown.
