Mrs. Ang Lim Thye nee Siow Sin Neo (Bukit Brown)

The tomb of Mrs. Ang Lim Thye nee Madam Siow Sin Neo was damaged by a huge fallen tree and that led to extensive damage on the left shoulder of the tomb (which covered totally the name of her sons). On the left shoulder of the tomb, fortunately the names of her daughters and grand daughters were still visible. Going on all fours and peaking below the fallen tree, we can still make out her name clearly. From her obituary notice, it only mentions that Mrs. Ang Lim Thye nee Madam Siow Sin Neo (Seow Soon Neo) passed away at the age of 58 on 7 June 1930. The cortege left from 70 Emerald Hill Road. Unfortunately, i could not find any article that mentions directly the name of her sons.

The names of her daughter and granddaughters on her tomb are as follows;
Daughters: Ang Soh Luan, Ang Soh Hwee, Ang Soh Choo, Ang Lui Neo, Ang Hoe Neo
Granddaughters: Ang Kim Kee, Ang Kim Lee, Ang Kim Choo, Ang Kim Lian

Husband: Ang Lim Thye
Mr. Ang Lim Thye (also spelt as Ang Lim Tye or Ang Lim Thay was a ship-owner operating from No. 10 Boat Quay. He was likely a trader and there was mentioned in articles from November 1901 that he imported and sold exotic sea shells from Ambonia. Most of the other articles mentioned his ship coming to port. The most major event was when SS Sarie Borneo (1,000 ton steamer boat), built for Mr. Ang Lim Thye was launched in August 1896 from the shipyard of Messrs Riley Hargreaves & Co at Tanjong Rhu. Ang Thye Lim passed away around 1902 /1903 and this was based on insight of a court case brought by the executor of the estate in August 1903 (see below story on "Court Case").

Court Case

In a Supreme Court case dated 20 August 1903, i got insight that Ang Lim Tye passed away sometime during that period and in September 1899, Ang Lim Tye purchased a property known as 145 Havlock Road for $43,787 and the property was made under the name of his wife, Seon Sin Neoh for her sole and separate use. The plaintiff for this case was Teng Seng Thjin (executor of the late Ang Lim Tye estate) and defendant was of course his wife, Siow Sin Neo. The court judged in favor of Madam Siow Sin Neo.

Family

The next step in the puzzle is trying to find out the names of Mrs. Ang Lim Thye children (especially her sons since that portion is missing from the tomb shoulder). To do that, i had to carefully search for her daughters and grand daughters and from there make cross references back to her sons and that allowed me to map and discover who they are. Another source is from a Geni.com entry of Ang Lim Thye where some of the daughters names do match what i already know. An example of this is, from Mrs. Ang Lim Thye tomb, her granddaughters, Ang Kim Lee and Ang Kim Choo help me to discover that one of his son is Dr. Ang Swee Hian.

Son: Dr. Ang Swee Hian
Graduated in 1923 from the King Edward VII College. Among the graduates in the same cohort was Dr. Soo Kim Lan (first female doctor in Malaya). Dr. Ang Swee Hian, Assistant Surgeon, Durian Daun Hospital, Malacca has left for Batavia for his marriage to Miss Then Soen Moi (eldest daughter of Mr. Then Djin Hian on 8 November 1924. He left the hospital in August 1928 to set up his own practice in Singapore. Before the war, he was actively involved in the Chinese Relief Fund. Before the fall of Singapore, Dr, Ang Swee Hian and his wife and child managed to leave Singapore and stay in Sita Mahal, 64 Walkeswar Road, Bombay. Dr. Ang Swee Hian and Mrs. Ang Swee Hian daughters are Lilian Ang Kim Lee and Ang Kim Choo.

Son: Ang Swee Teen
Marriage took place at St. Andrew's Cathedral at 3pm on 20 May 1922 between Mr. Ang Swee Teen and Miss Tan Cheng Sim. Mrs. Ang Lim Thye begs to inform that owning to the death of her grandmother, she is obliged to hold the reception on 20 May 1922 in honor of the wedding of her second son, Mr. Ang Swee Teen to Miss Tan Cheng Sim at 887 East Coast Road (next to Arcadea Cinema) the residence of her second daughter, instead of at 1-B Devonshire Road. The following article goes to mention that Mr. and Mrs. Tan Pong Guan beg to inform their friends that the reception in honor of their daughter's wedding on 20 May 1922 will be held at 886 East Coast Road, the residence of Mr. Choo Beng Lim (kindly lent for the occasion) instead of at 1-B Devonshire owning to former announcement. For this article, it has also given me insight that Mr. Choo Beng Lim married the second daughter of Mrs. Ang Lim Tye (Ang Soh Hwee).

2 years after the marriage, on 25 June 1924, the announcement that the remains of the late Mr. Ang Swee Teen (second son of Mrs. Ang Lim Thye) was brought back by s.s. Maetsuicker from Surabaya for burial in Bidadari. The cortege left from 50 Emerald Hill Road.

Son: Ang Swee Cheng
On 19 June 1919 at No. 382 Victoria Street, Singapore, Ang Swee Cheng (third son of Mrs. Ang Lim Tye aged 22 and a Medical Student at Hong Kong University. He was buried in Bidadari Cemetery.

Daughter: Ang Soh Hwee / Mrs. Choo Beng Lim
Mrs. Choo Beng Lim nee Ang Soh Wee passed away at the age of 61 at her residence, 230 Orchard Road on 17 July 1955. She leaves behind her husband, Choo Beng Lim, J.P. an only son, Choo Hwee Lim, 2 daughters, Choo Bin Neo and Choo Gwek Teen, 2 sons-in-law, Lim Kay and Tan Chin Tian of Semarang and 6 grandchildren. The cortege left for Straits Chinese Methodist Church at Kampong Kapor Road before Bidadari Cemetery.
