Earliest known photograph of Bukit Brown Cemetery Temple ?

As i was searching for more online resources, i come across this rare photograph from the Lee Brothers Studio Collection with the following caption, A Chinese funeral. The coffin being carried into the hearse by several coffin bearers. The date provided was 1911-1935. If you look closer at the temple just behind the hearse, a lot of it structural features seems to match closely of the one in Bukit Brown including the position of the offerings burner. You can see how clear the background of Hill 1 was too assuming this place is indeed Bukit Brown (See also my other post: Bukit Brown Cemetery temple - a hope for its resurrection, posted on 2 July 2021).

What do you think ? Do you agree with me that the above picture was possibly taken in Bukit Brown ? Leave a comment with your opinion or thoughts !

Known Old Photographs for Comparison

The previous oldest photo uncovered was from the Stanley T Tanner Collection from the National Archives. The photo was dated 1929 and describes a young John Tanner walking towards a shrine at a Chinese Cemetery, Singapore. However there was no indication of the location of this temple.  Fast forward to 1973 where a local Singapore film called Ring of Fury, where several scenes of the movie were filmed within Bukit Brown including the temple in Bukit Brown.
When comparing the stills from 1973 and the old 1929 photo, the entire structure of the temple including the roofs, facade, offerings burner and the path to the temple matches. It is very likely to conclude that this is the same temple taken during different times.

  1. I think it is most likely they are the same temple, given the architectural similarities. It is nice to know it was maintained for over 60 years, seems that the offering burner was added after it was photographed for the first time.
Is the former location of this temple known? Any idea what happened to it?
    Thanks for sharing.

    1. Yes. I know the former location. It was eventually destroyed, but unsure what year it was gone. https://mymindisrojak.blogspot.com/2021/07/bukit-brown-cemetery-temple-hope-for.html
