It was a stab in the dark request from the great grandson of Mr. Lim Hwee who was searching for his great grandfather tomb since last year. The key information was provided in his unsolicited message to me. Mr. Lim Hwee passed away at the age of 68 and was buried on 10 September 1935. The location of burial - Pauper 4 Division 2, plot 1111. My instinct led me to believe that his request was sincere and from the heart (and this wasn't a scam attempt). We started a conversation and long story short, within the same week, I met Vincent Lim (the great grandson of Mr. Lim Hwee) together with his parents, uncle, his sister and brother at the tomb of Mr. Lim Hwee. I found out that they had visited Mr. Lim Hwee before but due to COVID and the fog of time, they could not find the tomb in recent years.
It was a celebration of filial piety and desire to reconnect with his great grandfather and i do believe that heaven played its part in getting us to be instruments of a bigger grander picture of things and to help were possible. I learned that Mr. Lim Hwee work in the Traditional Chinese Medicine industry. He grew, harvested, bought and sold traditional chinese medicine on his own or as a sole proprietor. He did not run his business from a shop but from what i was told, he operated it in a mobile manner. Tragedy struck one day when Mr. Lim Hwee life was taken away in a hit-and-run accident.

We went on our way first for another appointment as Mr. Vincent Lim and family went on to pay respects to another ancestor. We later met them again at the tomb of Mrs. Lim Hwee at Lao Sua and i was very impressed when they had no problems finding the tomb of Mrs. Lim Hwee on their own as they have been visiting it regularly and also fortunately the path is clear. Another interesting point - the "Avatar Tree" is in the back ground.

Peter, on behalf of the Lim family, I want to express our deepest gratitude to you, Raymond and Ah Beng for helping us locate the tomb of my 太公. It has been a more than three years’ effort which I am glad finally pays off. The speed that you guys managed to locate the tomb is a testimony of how familiar you are with Bukit Brown, built on years of on the ground research.
ReplyDeleteWhen you sent me the photo first thing in the morning, which was barely 12 hours after I sent you the details the night before, I couldn’t believe that we have finally found it. I couldn’t wait for the Saturday to come. Ah Beng, who helped to clean up the overgrowth surrounding my 太公’s tomb has done a great job.
It was a bittersweet feeling when my entire extended family visited the tomb last Saturday. Our attempt to locate the tomb on our own last year was so way off that we missed the opportunity to pay our respect in front of the tomb. That being said, better late than never. The feeling was so surreal.
Thanks for accompanying us to visit my 太嫲’s tomb as well and helping to clean the headstone. I am glad that this great family’s tradition will continue.
Finally, for those who, just like us, who have not been able to locate your ancestor’s tomb, don’t give up. With some research and help from people with the passion to preserve our heritage, you will be rewarded.
Thank you for your kind words. Do continue to support Bukit Brown and my blog !
