Low Hoon Chip and Teo Geok Kim (Bukit Brown)

There was an article in 1909 that mentions that while the victoria (a light horse carriage) of Mr. Low Hoon Chip was waiting at his shop in Cecil Street, the horse took fright and bolted, breaking away from its harness and running into a ricksha. The syce (a person who looked after horses) fell from his seat and was run over by the carriage and sustained injury to his face. The horse was brought to a standstill by coming into contact with a bullock cart. From that account, we get insight of the early transportation in the early 1900's already ! I have little details though for now what business he was managing at Cecil Street. Mr. Low Hoon Chip passed away at the age of 72 on 4 August 1936. His wife is Madam Teo Geok Kim who passed away at the age of 66 on 15 May 1940.

Low Cheng was a Straits-born Chinese and was educated in Raffles School. He worked as a clerk in his father's shop in Cecil Street and was earning $70 a month in 1925. On the petition of Cycle and Carriage Co. , he was made a bankrupt for a debt of $154.15. However his cumulative debt owed to other creditors (such as The Chetty money lenders) amounted to $8,000.00 over a period of 4 years (from an initial debt of $300 it spiral upwards due to compond interest and for standing surety for his so called friends)

The marriage took place on 18 January 1953 at Dove's Nest, Tanjong Bungah, Penang between Low Cheng Hoe (fourth son of the late Low Hoon Chip of Singapore) and Miss Ng Saw Kui (youngest daughter of the late Ng Chye Hin of Taiping).
