The calendar inscription of the tomb 昭和 十七 translates to Shōwa year of 17 which in the Gregorian Calendar translates to 1942. So the person buried here died during the Japanese occupation of Singapore. It is very rare to see this calendar system here among the tombs in Bukit Brown although tombs following the Japanese imperial year (皇紀, kōki) or what i commonly term as the Japanese Koki Calendar are sometimes seen in Bukit Brown during the occupation period.
The Shōwa era (昭和, Shōwa) refers to the period of Japanese history corresponding to the reign of Emperor Shōwa (Hirohito) from December 25, 1926 until his death on January 7, 1989. The term could be roughly understood as meaning "enlightened peace" or in some interpretations "radiant Japan". (source: Wikipedia).
The person buried here is Tan Peck Lian ((陈柏连).
