Chew Moy Lam was a ship chandler and avid horse racer. Chew Moy Lam passed away at the age of 62 in 1963. He died without a will and estate worth $250,000 was contested by his widows.

Removed from petition were the name of 2 persons; Mary Chew Kim Mong (37) and Chew Kim Sun (33) named as being the "children" of the deceased with entitlement to the estate. The claims were opposed by Madam Soh on the grounds that their claim was invalid as both were only Mr. Chew's adopted children under customary rites.
