Quah Cheow Kay

From newspaper archives, Quah Cheow Kay name appeared in various events in 1916-1917 related to the Penang Volunteer Rifle Club (P.V.R.C.) where he held the rank of Private. He was also a committee member of the Penang Chinese Union (1924 -1929).

Writ of Summons amounting to $59,285.68

There was a writs of summon issued the Supreme Court of the Straits Settlements - Settlement of Penang on 12 August 1921 with the Plaintiff been The Ho Hong  Bank Limited and Quah Cheow Kay of Church Street, Penang as defendant. The claim is fo $59,285.68 being the amount due on his overdraft taken on 31 May 1921 together with an interest at $1 per $100 per mensem. What happened and what was the outcome of this writ, i am not sure.

Quah Cheow Kay - Oei Tjoe

In 1925, there was reported record of Mr. Quah Cheow Kay (on behalf of his towkay, Mr. Oei Thian Earn of Chop Seng Jin of 24 Market Street ) help mediate and set a compromise between the Chinese, Indian and Malay squatters on Alsagoff's estate which in the past had numerous clashes and friction with over 4,00 chinese squatters in this area. The newspaper reported this after seeing a long procession of Chinese carrying scrolls and other paraphernalia form Geylang to Market Street to show their gratitude to both Mr. Quah Cheow Kay and Mr. Oei Thian Earn. (Oei Thian Earn is the son of Mr. Oei Ek Tjoe, a well known Sugar King of Java).

In the 1930's i see records of bank shareholder meetings for Chinese Commercial Bank and Overseas-Chinese Bank attended by Quah Cheow Kay representing a Mr. Oei Tjoe. Maybe this was one of the reason that Mr. Quah Cheow Kay made Singapore his other business home while in most instances his name was more associated with Penang.

  1. Quah Cheow Kay is son of Quah Beng Hong. See Malaya Tribune, 17 January 1927, Page 6 or below:

What I cannot reconcile is that the gravestone for Quah Beng Hong quoted 莊江 as the ancestral place for Quah Cheow Kay quoted南安. Is莊江 within 南安?
