*Memoir of my grandpa, Yeo Seow Imm*
ReplyDeleteIn the early 19th century, he was only 20 years old but decided to migrate to Singapore from Fujian Province, China in search of job opportunity.
He started to work as an office boy for a local trading company. Apart from working in the office, he was frequently assigned to go to General Post Office ( GPO ) to send out company's letters and parcels to overseas clients.
Imagine the company was about 3 bus stop away from the GPO, company had given him the money to take the bus which was only few cents at the time. Instead of waiting for the bus, he always prefer to run to GPO to save the time of waiting for the bus which often take more than an hour to arrive. In so doing, he keep the bus fare money and yet he was appraised by his boss for accomplished the task in short time.
When it's time for lunch or dinner, he would wait until some group of diners finished off their meals. After they left, he would get an empty plate to choose what was edible to go with the free porridge water from the stall. In so doing he managed to save money.
In just a few years, he had accumulated a bit of money to speculate in buying land sales from auction for tittle deeds. He started buying lands in remote areas where the prices were low and affordable to him. He spread news amongst his friends to recommend potential buyers. He would take the opportunity to sell at highest price and reinvest in buying more prime lands.
When his wealth grow, he left his job and started his own trading company, Yeo Sin Wah Trading. He was cautious in deciding the type of products to trade. He told me that he was not keen in trading Raw Products as it cannot keep for long period. He decided to trade in Dry Products such as Rice, Dried Shrimps, Dried Anchovies, etc...
He would stocked up the items he bought in his Resident cum Office with Warehouse downstairs. There was a narrow staircase beside the warehouse that could go up to his office on first floor, within the office had another staircase that could go to his rooms and pantry on the second floor.
He also decided to start a Brickwork Factory at Jurong area. He believed that construction for housing had great demands for such building material.
He had four wives, eight sons and three daughters.
He assigned his fourth and fifth son to in charged of the Brickwork. But this Brickwork Factory only lasted for few years due to our Government wanted to build Public road directly cutting across our Brickwork.
He was licensed to consume opium and had an assistant to prepare for him to smoke it. The left over opium in paste formed was a good pain killer on patching on the affected body that had pain or rheumatism.
He was one of Singapore Millionaires. Before his death, he told all his children to come home, one from Australia and three from England and the rest in Singapore. Then he told them that he wanted to give each of them $20,000,00 for their investment. All of them were very pleased to receive the amount and started to put all into the plan in building a Hotel.
But the plan didn't kick off when one after another decided to withdraw their shares.
Perhaps my grandpa was pissed off when seeing that his children did not make full use of it and was very disappointed to see that most of his children spend away the money in lest than two years.
In the event of his death, he did not leave any Will. The assets was split with 60% went to Government and balance 40% amongst his children.
I could remember very clearly that during the wake, even the government officials came to attend it. And on the day of the funeral procession, it was very grand with three associations playing the instruments for the sendoff instead of officially allowed for maximum of two.
This is what I mean Rag to Riches but whatever wealth accumulated cannot be brought along to the netherworld.
God bless us.
